Proportionately Disproportionate

Ah, the joys of being uniquely proportioned – or as my friend has described me, “small hands, small feet, big [bust], big heart.” In addition, I also have a small head, short arms, and a long torso. None of these are necessarily problematic - it’s not like I’m an alien in a human’s skin suit or that I walk around like a tiny headed T-Rex. It just means that I’m a walking recipe for off-the-rack clothing struggles. Finding clothes that fit can be a bit of a scavenger hunt. And let's be real, the thought of sewing or getting stuff altered? Yeah, I'll pass. Lazy? Maybe. But hey, we all have our quirks.

All of these points are relative, and also super common. Meaning, for people my height (5’ 6”), I don’t really fit the mold, but “the mold” is garbage. The irony? The best-fitting tops I've found are in the women's petites section. Yeah, I know, it's like a cosmic joke. Nothing about me screams petite, and the whole ordeal dredges up memories of being forced into frilly dresses as a kid. But hey, when I do stumble upon something in the petite section, it's like hitting the jackpot – sleeves that actually hit where they're supposed to!

And shoes are another. Again, for my height, you don’t often see grown adults wearing size 6.5 in women’s shoes. So I try for boys’ shoes to get closer to the styles I like, but they are a swing and a miss a vast majority of the time. I can generally get away with sizing up to a 7 so it looks less like I have stolen a toddler’s shoes, but I’m still in women’s shoes, and restricted to those styles.

Despite the trials and tribulations, there's a certain thrill in stumbling upon those rare finds that fit like a glove and make you feel like a boss. It's like uncovering treasure in a sea of fashion mishaps. So to all my butch beauties out there, keep slaying and rocking your unique style. And to the fashion industry, it's time to step up your game and cater to all shapes and styles. It's not rocket science, folks.
